Q: What is a sPOD and why do I need it?
A: If you have: Off-Road lights, Air compressor, Air horns, lights, Electric radiator fans dual battery controls, CB, Ham radio, Fuel pump, Lockers Inverter, Electric windows, Electric door locks, Interior lighting, Work lights just to name a few then here is what you faced or will face installing those items; The correct way to power the above mentioned accessories is to get power from the battery, protecting the circuit with a fuse or circuit breaker, and utilizing relays to remove the load from the switch. A typical circuit such as mentioned above requires some electrical experience. Locating a power source, places to mount switches, fuses and relays are very difficult. The most common relays have between 4 & 5 wires that would normally need connection alone! The Relay/Fuse module we call the Source will make this process much easier by creating an independent source of power, relays, fuses and a circuit breaker bundled into one package. You only connect 2 wires for up to 6 accessories. Relay sockets are built in so you do not have to connect wires. The system is so complete that all that you have to do now is just connect your accessory wires (positive and negative) to the built in terminal block.

Q: Is the sPOD made in the USA?
A: ALL components are made right here in California and they will continue to build all of their products in the U.S.A.!

Q: What year FJ Cruiser will this fit?
A: All FJ-Cruisers. The sPOD switches and wire harness utilize the existing dash/console switch blanks giving a professional OEM appearance. Six multi-colored Contura switches are provided.

Q: What do I get with the FJ Cruiser sPOD Kit?
A: Each system includes the following:
1) All required mounting brackets and hardware (Six Contura switches, 2 Red, 2 Amber and 2 Green actuators , two piece Wire Harness set with 8 multi color leads utilizing 18 gauge wires. Each end has an automotive connector made by Deutsch). All wires are wrapped in high temp abrasion resistant nylon braided sleeves.
2) A Source 6 Circuit power distribution system (12 position terminal block for accessory attachment & 6 Bosch (Tyco) cube style relays (SPST 30amp) (plug-in style) & 6 ATO style automotive fuses 3 15 amp and 3 30 amp supplied & 6 Diodes to protect sensitive accessories such as LED lights from "field collapse" & Inline 50amp manual resetting circuit breaker & 8 gauge power leads with crimped and soldered terminal for connection to the battery!

Q: How waterproof is the switchboard up top? How waterproof is the source unit?
A: Weather and the elements was a very important factor in the engineering / design of the sPOD system! The designers have carefully selected components that are used in their systems with all the concerns of the elements. The switches used (Carling Technologies Contura) are rated with an IP67 - IP68 rating! http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/ip...ion-d_452.html This rating applies to front panel components and signifies protection against dust and the prolonged effects of immersion under pressure. The standard test for immersion under pressure requires submersion under one meter of water for 30 minutes.

All of sPOD connectors are of military / automotive quality. Their original test consisted of submersing the relay control module "Source" unit in a vat of salt water for 72 hours, removing from the salty water and then running a 396 Chevy starter motor on it for another 48 hours! They spiked an amazing 185amps! That was around the year 2003 with over a 1,000 system sold worldwide without a single problem caused by the elements!
We also use dielectric gel on all the contacts of the relays to help prevent corrosion. If something where to fail on the Source due to water damage, the factory we will replace it for just the cost of shipping both ways.

All of our components are 100% inspected, part numbered and date stamped with an inspector initials for traceability!

Q: What gauge wire do they use in their harness?
A: Battery power cables are made of 8AWG wire and nylon wrapped. Switch harness is made of 18AWG wires and nylon wrapped with an automotive connector made by Deutsch. theSource harness is made of 18AWG wires and nylon wrapped with a automotive connector made by Deutsch.

Q: My FJ came with stock ATRAC switch, Rear Lock, 400/100 inverter, Subwoofer, Back up sensor buttons. So that means I only have 5 spots for switches. Where can I put the 6th button?
A: If you have anything that you would want to keep hot all the time (CB, extra 12v plugs), SPod offers a jumper that you can hook up to make a circuit always hot. Example: You can have your CB and extra 12v outlets on one circuit.

Q: What is the Low Voltage Cutoff BATTERY PROTECTOR (LVCO)? And do I have to buy it?

A: We have all seen it before where someone left a light or other electrical item on and either forgot about it and went shopping, parked it and came back hours later only to find your battery dead. Think about a weak battery in the winter months! The LVCO is your answer to keep you running! The LVCO (Low-Voltage-Cut-Off) is a separately purchased item than the sPOD. It is a specially designed circuit that detects the battery voltage and will cut-off the power at 11.6VDC and cuts-back in at 12.8VDC so there is enough juice to start your FJ Cruiser in case you left an accessory on too long. The LVCO LED indicators provide easy to see battery condition with one Red LED to show low battery voltage and one Green LED to show normal voltage. If purchased with any sPOD system, the LVCO will come pre-wired and installed. If purchased for applications other than used with the sPOD system, the LVCO will come as an inline power plug and will work with accessories and appliances with a maximum current draw of 15 Amps. It comes with a 4' foot power cord to plug directly into any 12VDC power outlet. Buying the LVCO is an additional option purchase.

Q: I have a second battery in my FJ Cruiser, do I need a LVCO?
A: If you have a second battery that is “independent” from your primary you would not need the LVCO, instead sPOD has a in-line fuse that would replace it. The LVCO with a second battery will still be useful, but not necessary depending on the battery set up. Are your accessories are being powered from both batteries or just the one? It's really there to protect you from not being able to start your FJ. Quite a few people still run them as added insurance. So two LVCO’s are added insurance for a low price.

Q: I have two batteries, will this fit and work?
A: The Source mounts in the same spot. If you already have dual batteries, then this must be noted at time of purchase. This way we would supply the shorter battery cables instead of the 72" set.

Q: I already have some Carling switches. Can I use them with the sPOD?
A: The actuators are interchangeable and are compatible with all Carling Contura style switch bodies.

Q: Are there two different types of the LVCO?
A: Yes, they offer two versions of the LVCO;
1) Fully integrated when purchased as an option with their existing systems.
2) As a standalone part that plugs into the 12VDC power plug in your vehicle for electrical accessories that run constant eg;
Fridges, chargers etc.

Q: I have a ARB Compressor. How do I wire it to the sPOD?
A: They have designed a special wiring harness adapter to make it very simple! This specially designed harness Adapter will eliminate up to 16 wires coming into your FJ Cruiser. The harness to work with the ARB simplifies installation of your ARB and allows you to selectively engaged either front or rear anytime you wish. The rear does not have to be engaged first. Very handy if you are only climbing with the front wheels or doing a dig.

The battery monitor saves your morning when you forget to turn of the compressor the night before.

Q: So I get 6 Contura Switches when I buy the sPOD, are they pre-marked for certain things?
A: No. But you can purchase separately the label kit. The kit consists of 49 Labels on one sheet. White Vinyl Weatherproof with matte laminate coating, solid black background with white lettering. We recommend them to give your switches that professional touch!

Q: - So basically this system pre-wires you for 6 'devices'?
A: Yes, and eliminates the accessories fuses, relays and switches.

Q: The switches remotely control the relays in the source unit?
A: Yes, via a small diameter wire harness that attaches to our Relay control unit.

Q: If I were to buy an accessory...say a set of lights, I would not buy the kit that comes with relays and switch. I would only need to buy the lights only. I would then just connect the positive and negative wires from the lights to the terminals of the appropriate relay in the source unit?
A: It depends on the brand of light. Most luminary manufactures supply relays, fuses and switches. These for mentioned devices are usually substandard! Yes, you would run the positive and the negative wires directly from the lights directly to our relay control unit (we call this the Source) and connect to the appropriate # circuit, then go inside and flip a switch! Done!

Q: I can 'splice' together the wires from the 2 separate lights and connect to a single relay so both are controlled with a single switch? Do I have this right?

A: Absolutely YES! Each circuit is rated @30 amps! You can connect four 150 watt lights to one circuit! As long as you put the appropriate rated fuse in that socket on our relay control unit. All our circuits are symmetrical, that means that you can run whatever rated fuse you want in any of our circuits. We supply three 15 amp fuses and three 30 amp fuses.

Q: How much load can a single relay handle?
I would like to connect a set of rock lights to a single switch. Haven't decided for sure yet but it will be between 4 - 8 lights. I believe each light is 55 watts? Could a single relay handle this many lights?
A: See answer number 4. But each relay is rated at 30 amps.
